Netflix Cuts 6% of Staff in Biggest Layoff Since 2022

As of October 15, 2026, Netflix is cutting about 1,000 jobs, or 6% of its global workforce. It's the company's largest round of layoffs since 2022, and slowing revenue growth and declining viewing time are cited as the backdrop.

    About 1,000 peopleJobs being cut
    6%Share of total workforce affected
13.4%Q2 revenue growth, year over year
About 16,000Netflix employees at the end of last year

    Key points

    • Netflix told employees on Wednesday (US time) that it plans to cut about 6% of its workforce, roughly 1,000 people.
    • HR, legal, product development and technology teams are reportedly the main targets.
    • Second-quarter revenue rose 13.4% from a year earlier but came in slightly below Wall Street expectations.
    • Netflix reports quarterly earnings on Oct. 20, and executives say the company is still on track to hit its full-year outlook.

The Wall Street Journal and other US outlets reported Wednesday that Netflix plans to part ways with about 1,000 employees worldwide. Co-CEOs Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos sent a company-wide email that morning. The gist: to fulfill the company's mission, leaders have to make hard calls about where to put people and resources first. HR, legal, product development and technology teams are reportedly the main targets.

In the same message, executives stressed that the business is growing steadily and that the company is on track to meet this year's goals. The announcement comes roughly a week before Netflix reports quarterly earnings. In July, the company said second-quarter revenue hit about $12.6 billion, up 13.4% from a year earlier, which was a hair below what analysts expected. It guided for third-quarter revenue of around $12.9 billion.

The backdrop is a fight for screen time and market share. Netflix's US churn rate (the share of subscribers who cancel) is among the lowest in the industry, but analysts say engagement has softened as free platforms like YouTube eat into viewing time. Netflix has been trying to keep people around longer with live channels, bundles with other services, video podcasts, YouTube creator content and live sports and events. Its ad-supported tier and games are also being built up as revenue streams beyond subscription fees. An analyst at research firm eMarketer said the subscription model is nearing its limits, and no big replacement revenue source is in sight yet.

This is Netflix's first major workforce reduction since 2022, when a painful subscriber loss led to two rounds of cuts totaling roughly 450 people. With about 16,000 employees at the end of last year, the new round is more than double that size. The stock is a pressure point, too. Some reports say shares have dropped more than 40% over the past year, while others put the decline at around 25% so far this year. The gap comes down to different starting dates.

In Korea right nowKorean business and entertainment outlets are framing the news around slowing growth and the limits of diversifying revenue. The reports don't mention any changes to Netflix's Korean production teams or its investment plans in Korean content. Still, commentators have pointed out that Netflix hasn't had a blockbuster in a while on the scale of 'Stranger Things' or 'Squid Game,' the kind of hit that lifts both subscribers and viewing hours. K-content players chasing global hits are now watching closely to see how Netflix's investment posture shifts after the Oct. 20 earnings call.

    FAQ

How many people is Netflix laying off?

    Which teams are affected?

Reports point to HR, legal, product development and technology teams. No specific details about content production teams have emerged so far.

What should I watch for next?

Netflix reports quarterly earnings on Oct. 20. Revenue growth, user engagement and how the ad-supported tier is performing are the key numbers for gauging where the company is headed.

    • Through Q3 this year, Jeju Air carried about 1.29 million passengers on international flights from Busan, per South Korea's transport ministry.

Jeju Air, one of South Korea's biggest low-cost carriers, is opening a new nonstop route between Busan and Manila. The first flight is December 17, and the route will run five times a week: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The airline announced the plan on Oct. 13.

Here's the schedule. The outbound flight leaves Busan's Gimhae Airport at 9:30 p.m. and lands at Manila's Ninoy Aquino International Airport at 12:45 a.m., after midnight. The return leaves Manila at 1:45 a.m. and touches down in Gimhae at 7:20 a.m. the same day. All times are local to each airport.

To mark the launch, Jeju Air is running promotions. Through Oct. 25, members can use discount codes worth up to about half off, and the airline is also offering partner discounts on Philippine hotel and tour packages.

Busan's growing travel market is behind the expansion. According to the transport ministry's aviation data portal, Jeju Air carried about 1.29 million passengers on international flights from Busan through the third quarter of this year, up 13% from a year earlier. The airline currently flies 14 international routes from Busan to Mongolia, Japan, Greater China and Southeast Asia. Manila will make it 15.

Manila is a leading Philippine destination, known for Intramuros, the walled city from the Spanish colonial era. The airline also pointed to steady demand for big shopping malls, day trips to nearby islands and waterfalls, and golf trips. A Jeju Air representative said Busan is so popular with foreign tourists that a new slang term, "Busan-byeong" (roughly, "Busan fever"), has popped up, and expects more nonstop routes to bring more visitors to Korea too. The airline added that it will keep developing routes based on regional travel demand.

In Korea right nowBusan has seen a surge of visitors lately, including from Taiwan, and airlines keep adding flights there. Jeju Air also reworked its Japan routes from Incheon around the same time. Hakodate flights resume Dec. 1 and Kagoshima flights resume Oct. 25, both daily. The airline also said it secured additional China route rights, a sign that competition among low-cost carriers this winter is heating up.

    FAQ

Which days does the Busan–Manila route operate?

Starting December 17, it flies five times a week: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. There are no flights on Wednesday or Sunday.

How long is the launch discount available?

Through October 25. Jeju Air members can use discount codes worth up to about half off, and partner discounts on Philippine hotel and tour packages are also offered.

Why is Jeju Air adding more flights from Busan?

International passengers from Busan hit about 1.29 million through Q3 this year, up 13% from a year earlier, and more foreign tourists are visiting Busan. The airline expects nonstop route growth to boost inbound travel to Korea as well.

  • North Korea Shows Troops K-Drama Trial Videos

North Korea Shows Troops K-Drama Trial Videos

As of October 13, 2026, Radio Free Asia (RFA) reports that the North Korean military is using videos of trials and punishments of soldiers who watched outside media, such as South Korean dramas, as training material inside army units. The footage was reportedly made around 2023 and is still in use.

Around 2023When the training video was made, per RFA
5+ yearsLabor-camp sentence cited in the video
7+ yearsMinimum military service for young North Korean men, per an expert

    Key points

    • Citing multiple anonymous sources, RFA reported that the video was made around 2023 and continues to be used in military unit training.
    • The footage shows confiscated cell phones, an arrest warrant, soldiers being arrested at a public trial, and a written self-criticism.
    • Speakers in the video cite labor-camp sentences of five years or more with no amnesty, and some even call for summary execution and punishing entire families.
    • A visiting professor at Japan's Hiroshima University said that making military trials public at all shows how worried the army is about ideological contamination.

The U.S.-based outlet Radio Free Asia (RFA) obtained and released a video that shows how North Korea catches and punishes soldiers and unit staff who watch or share outside media. On screen are several confiscated cell phones and an arrest warrant. Soldiers are arrested at a public trial, stripped of their belts and caps. The footage also includes a punished soldier writing a self-criticism and a military doctor's case file. RFA said it confirmed the details with multiple anonymous sources.

The rhetoric in the video is harsh. One woman on a discussion panel argued that anyone who watched American or South Korean videos should be hunted down and executed on the spot. A narrator branded viewers as traitors in league with the enemy and warned that watching banned videos ruins not just the viewer's life but also the lives of family and relatives, a nod to collective punishment. One punished soldier, in tears, said he regretted it because South Korean speech patterns and ideas wouldn't leave his head. Still, these are claims made inside the video. No actual executions have been reported.

The video also spells out the penalties. It stresses that this kind of viewing is a serious crime punishable by at least five years of labor-camp detention, and that offenders are excluded from amnesty. It also points out that soldiers are already barred from using civilian cell phones, yet some used them to get, watch, store and spread banned videos.

North Korea passed its Anti-Reactionary Thought and Culture Law in 2020, then added measures such as the Pyongyang Cultural Language Protection Act to keep outside culture out. In an RFA interview, Yoshihiro Makino, a visiting professor at Hiroshima University, explained that young North Korean men enlist around age 17 and serve at least seven years, sometimes more than ten, so it's hard for a military full of young people to stay indifferent to South Korean culture. He noted that military trials are normally held behind closed doors, which suggests that putting one on video reflects the military's deep fear of ideological contamination.

In Korea right nowHere in South Korea: Major outlets including SBS, Korea Economic Daily, Seoul Shinmun and Edaily covered the video on Oct. 12-13. The idea that soldiers are being punished for watching K-dramas and movies, and that this is used as teaching material, is being read as a sign the Korean Wave (Hallyu) has reached inside North Korean barracks.

    FAQ

Has the video been verified as authentic?

The reporting rests on RFA's account that it obtained the video through multiple anonymous sources. It doesn't include any independent verification of the footage.

Were summary executions actually carried out, as the video suggests?

Summary execution appears only as something a panelist in the video demanded. No actual cases have been confirmed in the reporting. The only specific penalty mentioned is a labor-camp sentence of five years or more.

Why would North Korea show soldiers a video like this?

Experts see it as the leadership's worry that interest in South Korean and other outside culture is growing in a military full of young people.

  • North Korean Army Video Shows K-Drama Viewers Punished

North Korean Army Video Shows K-Drama Viewers Punished

As of October 12, 2026, US-based Radio Free Asia (RFA) has released an indoctrination video used inside the North Korean military. It shows soldiers who watched South Korean dramas and films being put on public trial and punished, along with calls for summary execution.

2 yearsLabor-camp sentence shown in the video
5+ yearsLabor-camp sentence the video cites for watching offenses
Around 2023When RFA says the video was made

    Key points

    • RFA says the video was made around 2023, and anonymous sources told the outlet it is still used in military unit training.
    • The footage shows soldiers' phones being confiscated, public trials and handwritten self-criticisms.
    • One speaker in the video calls for summary execution and for punishing family members as well.
    • Among the sentences shown is a two-year labor-camp term.

The video RFA released on the 12th is training material used for ideological education in North Korean army units. Soldiers are banned from using personal cell phones on base, but the video accuses some of buying, watching, storing and passing around outside recordings on such devices. North Korea calls this kind of content "impure recordings."

On screen are several confiscated phones and arrest documents. Soldiers who were caught are led into a public trial with their belts and caps removed. One soldier, in tears, writes a self-criticism, saying that after watching a few videos he couldn't get the Southern accent and capitalist ideas out of his head. Authorities reportedly screen these scenes to other soldiers to scare them straight.

The rhetoric is harsh. One female speaker demands that people tainted by outside culture be summarily executed and hunted down to the end. Others suggest families should be held responsible too, and a narrator warns that watching ruins not just the viewer but also the lives of their family and relatives. Another speaker explains that watching is a serious crime carrying a labor re-education sentence (a term in a prison labor camp) of five years or more, with no eligibility for a general amnesty.

A Japanese diplomatic correspondent quoted by RFA said that with young men serving up to a decade or more in the military, it's hard to believe they have no interest in South Korean culture. He added that the very fact that military trials are made public shows how wary the military is of ideological contamination.

Pyongyang has passed a string of laws to block outside culture, including the Reactionary Ideology and Culture Rejection Act (2020), the Youth Education Guarantee Act (2021) and the Pyongyang Cultural Language Protection Act (2023). That said, the video's authenticity and how widely it is used today rest on testimony from sources cited by RFA.

In Korea right nowSouth Korean media have focused on the severity of the punishments, and on what the video implies: despite tight controls, South Korean content has clearly reached inside the military. How South Korean dramas and films are consumed by North Korean civilians and soldiers has long been a recurring theme in inter-Korean relations and North Korean human rights debates, so the report is drawing continued attention.

    FAQ

Who released the video, and when was it made?

Radio Free Asia (RFA), a US-based outlet, released it on the 12th. RFA says the video is believed to have been made around 2023.

What punishments does the video show?

It shows phone confiscations, arrests at a public trial and soldiers writing self-criticisms. One sentence shown is a two-year labor-camp term.

Does this mean summary executions actually took place?

That's not something we can conclude. A speaker in the video argued for summary execution, but the report does not confirm that any were carried out.

BTS Draws 150,000 Fans Over 3 Sold-Out Nights in Lima

As of October 12, 2026, BTS has wrapped three nights in Lima, Peru, their first-ever concerts in the country, playing to more than 150,000 fans. The two originally planned shows and one added date all sold out. Peruvian officials and the local chamber of commerce expect a significant boost to tourism and spending.

150,000+Total attendance across three Lima shows
3 showsSold-out dates, including the added show
About 25 billion won (~$19M)Peru trade and tourism ministry's projected tourism impact
About 78 billion won (~$59M)Lima Chamber of Commerce's upper-end estimate of economic activity

    Key points

    • BTS performed at Estadio San Marcos in Lima on Oct. 7, 9 and 10 (local time).
    • Their agency says total attendance topped 150,000, with every show, including the added date, selling out.
    • Peru's trade and tourism ministry projected a tourism impact of about 25 billion won (roughly $19 million), while the Lima Chamber of Commerce estimated up to 78 billion won (roughly $59 million) in broader economic activity.
    • The South American leg continues with Santiago, Chile; La Plata, Argentina; and São Paulo, Brazil.

This was BTS's first full concert in Peru. The shows took place at Estadio San Marcos in Lima, starting Oct. 7 and continuing on the 9th and 10th. Their agency says the three-night total came in just over 150,000.

Only two nights were originally scheduled. Tickets went so fast that a third was added, and it sold out too. The crowd kept up wave after wave of fan chants and sing-alongs, and the members answered with "I love you" in Spanish.

The members said they were blown away by the local fans' energy and wished they'd come sooner. Jimin, who turns 31 on Oct. 13, got a roar when he said he'd carry the love from the other side of the world with him.

The economics drew attention, too. Before the shows, Peru's trade and tourism ministry estimated that more than 50,000 visitors from outside Lima would come, putting the tourism boost at nearly $19 million. The Lima Chamber of Commerce said that once you add up tickets, hotels, food, transport, sightseeing and official merchandise, activity could reach as much as 200 million soles.

Getting-there data told a similar story. Citing figures from ride-hailing company Cabify, local daily El Comercio reported that ride requests toward the stadium on opening night ran up to 15 times normal, then spiked up to 48 times right after the show ended. BTS now continues its world tour, Arirang, which kicked off in April, with Santiago dates on Oct. 14, 16 and 17, followed by La Plata and São Paulo.

In Korea right nowKorean broadcasters, telecom outlets and entertainment media have been running updates from Lima nonstop. Two things stood out: BTS sold out an added show in a market they'd never played, and Peru's government and business community published economic estimates before the first note was sung. For many readers, it's a sign of how a K-pop world tour can move local economies and even transportation demand in South America.

    FAQ

When and where did BTS play in Peru?

They performed at Estadio San Marcos in Lima on Oct. 7, 9 and 10, local time. It was their first concert in Peru since their debut.

    How many people attended?

According to BTS's agency, the three-night total topped 150,000. Only two nights were originally planned, but a third was added, and all three sold out.

What's next on the tour after Lima?

BTS plays Santiago, Chile, on Oct. 14, 16 and 17, then heads to La Plata, Argentina, and São Paulo, Brazil, to continue the South American leg.

  • Korea’s Exports Hit Record $26.1B in Early October

Korea’s Exports Hit Record $26.1B in Early October

As of October 12, 2026, South Korea's exports for the first 10 days of October totaled about $26.1 billion, more than double a year earlier and a record for that stretch of the month. Semiconductors drove the surge, making up nearly half of all shipments. The trade surplus over the same period was about $3.8 billion.

    $26.1 billionExports, Oct. 1-10 (preliminary, customs-clearance basis)
    170.9%Year-over-year growth in chip exports
    46.7%Chips' share of total exports
$3.8 billionTrade surplus for the same period

    Key points

    • Preliminary Korea Customs Service data (customs-clearance basis) show exports of about $26.1 billion from Oct. 1 to 10, the highest ever for the period.
    • Chip exports hit about $12.2 billion, roughly 2.7 times the level a year earlier, and accounted for 46.7% of all exports.
    • Imports rose to about $22.3 billion, but exports grew faster, leaving a trade surplus of about $3.8 billion.
    • This year's period had two more working days than last year's, but daily average exports still rose 28.5%.

Preliminary figures from the Korea Customs Service (customs-clearance basis) show South Korea shipped about $26.1 billion worth of goods overseas in the first 10 days of October. That's more than double the same stretch last October, and a record for the period. One caveat: this year's window had 5.5 working days, two more than last year, which inflates the raw growth rate somewhat. On a per-day basis, exports averaged about $4.75 billion. That's still up 28.5% from last year, and still a record for the period.

Semiconductors did the heavy lifting. Chip exports reached about $12.2 billion, roughly 2.7 times last year's level and another record for the period. Chips made up 46.7% of all exports, 11.9 percentage points higher than at this point last year.

Most other categories grew too. Passenger cars and wireless communication devices rose by 80% and 60%, respectively, while steel products and refined petroleum products each climbed by about 40%. Ships were the notable exception, falling 13.4%. By market, shipments to China rose by roughly 167% and to the US by nearly 160%, while the European Union grew by about 120% and Vietnam by nearly 90%. China, the US and Vietnam together accounted for 52.3% of total exports.

Imports climbed as well. They totaled about $22.3 billion, up 65.5% from a year earlier. Gas imports more than doubled, crude oil rose 56.2% and semiconductors 66.7%, and combined energy imports (crude, gas and coal) were up 64.8%. Only refined petroleum product imports fell, by 10.9%. With exports outpacing imports, the trade surplus came to about $3.8 billion.

In Korea right nowIn Korea, the numbers have sharpened a familiar worry and a familiar boast: a single product, chips, now props up nearly half of all exports. Local media also noted that daily average exports rose even after adjusting for the extra working days. Some analysts caution that this is only a 10-day preliminary tally, so whether the pace holds for the full month won't be clear until the end-of-month data arrives.

    FAQ

    Why did exports double?

The biggest driver was a surge in semiconductor exports. The first 10 days of October also had 5.5 working days this year versus 3.5 last year, which inflates the headline growth. Adjusted for that, daily average exports rose 28.5%.

Is this the full October figure?

No. It's a preliminary customs-clearance tally for Oct. 1 to 10 from the Korea Customs Service. Full-month exports will be finalized in later reports.

Is Korea running a trade surplus or deficit?

A surplus. Exports of about $26.1 billion outpaced imports of about $22.3 billion, a gap of about $3.8 billion.

Samsung Chip Bonus Details Spark ‘3 Billion Won’ Post

As of October 10, 2026, Samsung Electronics' chip division (known as DS) told staff it will pay a special performance bonus tied to this year's results, in company stock, between late March and early April next year. A union estimates that a memory-unit employee earning just over 80 million won a year would collect about 750 million won before tax, existing bonus included, and that figure fueled a viral online post from a Samsung couple eyeing '3 billion won.'

3 billion won+Combined bonus a Blind poster expects for themselves and their spouse
45%Income tax rate withheld up front when the bonus is paid
195 trillion wonSamsung Electronics' preliminary Q3 revenue this year

    Key points

    • On Oct. 7, the DS division told employees the detailed criteria and payout schedule for the special management bonus.
    • The program was created in a labor-management deal last May; it sits on top of the existing excess-profit bonus (OPI) and has no cap on the payout rate.
    • The bonus comes as company stock rather than cash, and only one-third can be sold right away.
    • On the anonymous workplace app Blind, a user who said they and their spouse work in the same unit posted that they expect more than 3 billion won combined.

On Oct. 7, Samsung Electronics' DS division told employees exactly how its special management bonus will be calculated and when it will be paid. Labor and management agreed on the program last May. It stacks on top of the existing excess-profit bonus (OPI) rather than replacing it, and there is no ceiling on the payout rate. Of the pool, 40% is split across the whole DS division, while the other 60% is divvied up by business-unit performance. Shared corporate teams get a payout rate of roughly 70% of what the memory side gets.

Payment is set for late March to early April, after next year's regular shareholder meeting. Tax comes out first at the top bracket rate of 45%, which becomes 49.5% once local income tax is added. What's left is paid in Samsung shares instead of cash, with the share count calculated from the stock price on payout day. Employees can sell one-third of the shares immediately. The remainder is split in half, and those portions can be sold only after one year and two years.

The headline estimate comes from the Super-Enterprise Union. Using brokerage forecasts, the union calculated what an employee earning a bit over 80 million won a year would get before tax, OPI included: about 750 million won in the memory unit, 530 million won in shared corporate teams, and 240 million won in the System LSI and foundry units. Those are the union's own projections, so actual payouts may differ depending on DS results. Samsung preliminarily reported Q3 revenue of 195 trillion won and operating profit of 107.4 trillion won, the first time a Korean company has topped 100 trillion won in quarterly operating profit.

Against that backdrop, a post appeared on Blind, an anonymous app for office workers, from a verified Samsung employee identified as A, in their early 30s. A said their wife also works in the memory unit. They wrote that after about five years as a dual-income couple, the home they bought for 800 million won is now worth 1.2 billion won, and they are preparing to move up to a home in the upper 1-billion-won range with a company loan. Their two bonuses together would top 3 billion won, they wrote, and if things play out as expected, they figure they could quit within five years.

In Korea right nowRight now in Korea, people are watching how fast the chip boom is flowing into employee paychecks. Many commenters on the post offered congratulations and a little envy. Some Samsung employees urged the poster to delete it and take the money quietly, warning that public sentiment could sour. There was also a report that Micron's Taiwan union won the right to strike while demanding 15% of operating profit, so pay at Korean memory makers is becoming a benchmark for labor groups abroad too.

    FAQ

Is the Samsung special bonus paid in cash?

No. After taxes and insurance are deducted, the remainder is paid in Samsung shares, with the share count based on the stock price on payout day.

Can employees sell the shares right away?

One-third can be sold immediately after payout. The rest is locked up for one year and two years, respectively.

Is the 750 million won figure guaranteed?

No. It's a pre-tax estimate the Super-Enterprise Union calculated from brokerage forecasts, and the actual amount may vary with this year's DS results, length of service and other factors.

Yeon Sang-ho’s ‘Paradise Lost’ Hits Busan Film Fest

As of October 10, 2026, director Yeon Sang-ho held an official press conference for his new film 'Paradise Lost' (Korean title: 'Sillagwon') at the 31st Busan International Film Festival (BIFF). The psychological thriller stars Kim Hyun-joo and Bae Hyun-sung, and it opens in Korean theaters on Oct. 21.

316 filmsTitles screening at this year's Busan International Film Festival
59 countriesCountries represented at this year's festival
9 yearsHow long the son has been missing in the film

    Key points

    • 'Paradise Lost' is an invited title in the Gala Presentation section at this year's Busan International Film Festival.
    • Yeon, Kim and Bae met the press on the morning of Oct. 10 at BIFF Hill, part of the Busan Cinema Center in Haeundae.
    • The film is a psychological thriller about a mother whose son vanished, only for the boy she thought was dead to turn up again.
    • The film opens in Korean theaters on Oct. 21.

'Paradise Lost' is a psychological thriller from director Yeon Sang-ho. Its heroine, Ryu So-young, lost her son nine years ago when a camp school bus disappeared. Then Ryu Sun-woo, the boy she believed was gone for good, suddenly resurfaces, and that's where the story kicks into gear.

Yeon and stars Kim Hyun-joo and Bae Hyun-sung held their press conference on the morning of Oct. 10 at BIFF Hill, the Busan Cinema Center's press venue in Haeundae. The day before, Yeon and Kim met fans first at an outdoor stage greeting, and the Loop Theater was packed with barely an empty seat. After the press conference, the team heads to the film's second screening and a Q&A with the audience (called a GV in Korea) to round out their Busan schedule.

Yeon said the project began with a question: what is still human in the age of AI? The title, he explained, comes from the idea that a being cast out of paradise will long for it forever, which he sees as the root of human identity. He sounded confident about the two leads, calling their performances the film's biggest draw.

Kim said playing a mother who has lost a child felt daunting, but she was drawn to a story that digs deep into a single side of one character. She found it fascinating to pull out her own darker side and push it to the extreme. Having to hit peak emotion within a short shooting schedule was hard, she said, but also fun. Her favorite scene is the first meeting between So-young and her son at the front door, with So-young wearing AI glasses. She described Yeon as a director who lets an actor's emotions surface naturally instead of piling on instructions.

The festival runs through Oct. 15 and is showing 316 films from 59 countries. Once it wraps, 'Paradise Lost' meets the general public on Oct. 21.

In Korea right nowRight now in Korea, Busan festival season means new-film launches and star schedules dominate the buzz. 'Paradise Lost' filled the house at its outdoor stage greeting on Oct. 9, and having the director and both leads at the Oct. 10 press conference has built anticipation ahead of release. Its theme of humanity in the AI era also taps into what many people in Korea are thinking about these days.

    FAQ

It's a psychological thriller about Ryu So-young, a mother who lost her son in a disappearance, and what happens when Ryu Sun-woo, the son she thought was dead, comes back. Yeon Sang-ho directs, and Kim Hyun-joo and Bae Hyun-sung star.

After its Busan International Film Festival screenings, it is scheduled to open in Korean theaters on Oct. 21.

The 31st edition runs through Oct. 15 and is screening 316 films from 59 countries.

  • Seoul Tops Condé Nast Readers’ Poll for Best Big City

Seoul Tops Condé Nast Readers’ Poll for Best Big City

As of October 9, 2026, Seoul is the No. 1 big city in the world, according to readers of Condé Nast Traveler, the first time it has topped the magazine's large-city category. Seoul jumped four spots from fifth place last year, bumping Tokyo, the two-time defending champ, down to second.

39thEdition of the Readers' Choice Awards
~800,000Reader votes cast across all award categories
11.56 millionForeign visitors to Seoul, January-August
+21.6%Increase in foreign visitors vs. the same period last year

    Key points

    • Seoul took the top spot in the large-city category of this year's Readers' Choice Awards, released October 6 U.S. time.
    • Tokyo finished second, Paris seventh and Singapore ninth.
    • Seoul also placed third in the U.K. edition of Condé Nast Traveler's ranking of the friendliest cities.
    • Foreign visitors to Seoul hit a record of roughly 11.56 million from January through August this year.

The Seoul city government shared the news on Oct. 8. In Condé Nast Traveler's reader poll, announced October 6 U.S. time, Seoul landed at the top of the large-city category. It's the first time Seoul has won this category. Last year, it came in fifth.

Tokyo sits just one notch behind in second place. The Japanese capital had won two years running, in 2024 and 2025. Third through fifth place went to Cambodia's capital, Shanghai and Sydney, in that order. Paris came in seventh and Singapore ninth.

Now in its 39th year, the awards are decided entirely by reader votes. Counting cities along with hotels, resorts, airlines and other categories, nearly 800,000 votes came in. Condé Nast Traveler launched in 1987 and belongs to the media group behind Vogue and The New Yorker.

In a September 2025 piece on Seoul, the magazine said global fascination with K-pop, K-beauty and K-dramas has turned the city into a hot travel destination. It also pointed to more than 2,000 years of history and culture underneath. Old traditions and cutting-edge tech, budget-friendly travel and luxury splurges all live side by side, the magazine said, with plenty of options in beauty, wellness, art and food.

Other outlets have been showering Seoul with praise too. In the U.K. edition of Condé Nast Traveler's friendliest cities ranking, Seoul came in third. The small everyday kindnesses stick with travelers, the magazine noted, like restaurant owners walking guests through a dish or locals pointing the way on the subway. Last month, Britain's Time Out named Jongno 3-ga, a historic downtown neighborhood, the coolest neighborhood of the year. And on Trazy Travel's global ranking of favorite cities among MZ travelers (millennials and Gen Z), Seoul has ranked No. 1 for five straight years.

In Korea right nowCity officials read the result as proof that Seoul's signature assets, like hanok (traditional Korean houses), narrow alleys and historic sites, are translating into real experiences for visitors. Mayor Oh Se-hoon said the city will keep its traditional charm intact while adding fresh energy, aiming to be a destination people stay in longer and come back to. Plans include more traditional culture experiences, nighttime programs and activities built around the Han River and downtown green spaces, all meant to extend stays and boost return visits. The tourism numbers back it up. Foreign visitors from January through August are well above last year's roughly 9.5 million for the same period, and their card spending jumped about 60%, from around 4.9 trillion won to around 7.8 trillion won.

    FAQ

How was Seoul's No. 1 ranking decided?

It's based on votes from Condé Nast Traveler readers, not a panel of experts. This is the 39th edition of the Readers' Choice Awards, and nearly 800,000 votes were counted across all categories.

Is this the first time Seoul has topped the large-city category?

Yes. According to the Seoul city government, this is Seoul's first win in the category. It placed fifth last year, and Tokyo took first place in the two years before that.

What can travelers expect in Seoul?

The magazine highlighted historic spots like palaces and hanok, cutting-edge technology, beauty and wellness, food and art. Everyday kindness from locals also earned high marks.

2 awardsAwards won by 'Owner of the World'
16 million+ viewersCumulative audience for 'The King's Warden'
35thEdition of this year's Buil Film Awards

    Key points

    • Park Ji-hoon and Jeon Mi-do won Stars of the Year, and the late critic Lim Jae-chul received the Yu Hyun-mok Film Arts Award.

The Buil Film Awards, organized by the Busan Ilbo newspaper, reached their 35th edition this year. The ceremony was held October 7 at a hotel venue in Busan, and organizers announced the full results the next day. The top prize, Best Film, went to Yoon Ga-eun's 'Owner of the World.' In the story of 'Juin,' an 18-year-old high schooler, Seo Su-bin also won Best Actress in her first-ever screen role.

Best Director went to Na Hong-jin for 'Hope.' Beyond directing, the film also swept Best Supporting Actor for Eum Moon-suk, Best New Actress for Jung Ho-yeon, Best Cinematography, and Best Art and Technical Achievement. Five trophies for a single film is the most at this year's ceremony. Best Supporting Actress went to Yum Hye-ran for 'No Other Choice.'

Best Actor went to Yoo Hae-jin, who plays the village chief in the town where an exiled king stays in Jang Hang-jun's period drama 'The King's Warden.' The film is a blockbuster that has drawn more than 16 million viewers. Park Ji-hoon and Jeon Mi-do, from the same film, shared the male and female Star of the Year awards. Best New Actor went to Jo Yu-hyeon for '3670,' and the Yu Hyun-mok Film Arts Award went to film critic Lim Jae-chul, who died this year.

Launched in 1958, the Buil Film Awards are considered the oldest film awards in Korea. This year they honored winners and films across 16 categories, including picture, director, acting and technical work. What defined the results was that indie and low-budget films were called up alongside big box-office hits.

In Korea right nowIn Korea, the reason Yoo Hae-jin didn't show up got as much attention as the winners themselves. The Hankyoreh reported that some politicians and far-right figures claim 'Assassin(s)' distorts history and are threatening the actor's safety, while the Kyunghyang Shinmun reported a boycott of products the actor advertises and protests outside the actor's home. Yoo also reportedly missed the opening ceremony of the Busan International Film Festival, and scheduled stage greetings were canceled. Inside and outside the film world, many see the absence of the year's top box-office star as a sign of how heavy the conflict around the film has become.

    FAQ

What are the Buil Film Awards?

Na Hong-jin's 'Hope' won five: Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, Best New Actress, Best Cinematography, and Best Art and Technical Achievement. The top prize, Best Film, went to 'Owner of the World.'

Why didn't Best Actor winner Yoo Hae-jin attend the ceremony?
