  • Korea’s Exports Top $800 Billion in 9 Months, a Record

Korea’s Exports Top $800 Billion in 9 Months, a Record

As of October 1, 2026, South Korea's September exports hit a record of about $120.9 billion, and shipments for January through September reached about $814.5 billion, topping $800 billion for the first time. Semiconductors, at about $60.3 billion, made up nearly half of the total.

    $120.9 billionMonthly exports, September 2026
    $814.5 billionCumulative exports, January-September
    $60.3 billionSemiconductor exports in September
    About $49.9 billionSeptember trade surplus

    Key points

    • September exports came in at about $120.9 billion, up 83.5% from a year earlier and the highest monthly total ever.
    • Shipments for January through September reached about $814.5 billion, already above all of last year's exports (about $709.3 billion).
    • Chip exports passed $60 billion in a single month for the first time, accounting for 49.9% of all exports.
    • September's trade surplus was about $49.9 billion, the first monthly surplus above $40 billion.

According to September trade data released today by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, South Korea's exports last month totaled about $120.9 billion, up 83.5% from the same month a year earlier. It's the first time monthly exports have cleared $120 billion, and it blows past the previous record of about $102.0 billion, set in June. Adjusted for working days, average daily exports rose to about $5.6 billion, topping $5 billion for the first time, with growth of 105%.

On a cumulative basis, exports from January through September come to about $814.5 billion. That means Korea beat last year's full-year record of about $709.3 billion in just nine months. The country is about $185.5 billion short of the $1 trillion mark for the year, and the government says it expects to get there in 2026.

Chips drove the surge. Semiconductor exports topped $60 billion in a single month for the first time, up 262.8% from a year earlier and well above the previous monthly high of about $46.7 billion in August. They accounted for 49.9% of all exports, nearly half. With memory demand holding strong, both shipment volumes and fixed contract prices climbed. Between May and September, the price of a DDR5 16Gb chip rose from $37.5 to $48, and a NAND 128Gb chip went from $26.5 to $30.6.

Other categories moved up too. Computer exports jumped 435.3% to a monthly record of about $7.0 billion, helped by rising AI infrastructure spending and demand for enterprise SSDs. Cosmetics set another monthly high at about $1.5 billion, and wireless communications devices posted an 11th straight month of growth. Autos were the exception, falling 5.5% as the timing of the Chuseok (Korean harvest festival) holiday and weak used-car sales weighed on shipments. By region, China took about $26.0 billion and the U.S. about $24.3 billion. ASEAN topped $20 billion for the first time, at about $21.3 billion.

Imports in September were about $71.1 billion, up 26.0%. That left a trade surplus of about $49.9 billion, and the cumulative surplus for January through September now tops $250 billion. Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan called the results proof of Korean industry's competitiveness. He added that the government will act early so unexpected external shocks don't drag on exports, aiming to keep the upswing going in the fourth quarter.

In Korea right nowIn Korea, the numbers are fueling hope that the country can hit $1 trillion in annual exports. Chips are close to half of the total, but exports excluding semiconductors also grew 23%, and 11 of the 20 main export items rose. Another notable detail: even as U.S. tariffs and EU import quotas tightened, steel exports edged up 3.3% on demand from U.S. AI data centers.

    FAQ

What does crossing $800 billion in exports mean?

Cumulative exports for January through September reached about $814.5 billion, already above last year's full-year total of about $709.3 billion, which was itself the previous record. Fourth-quarter shipments will push the record higher still.

    Why did exports surge?

Semiconductors are the core story. With memory demand still strong, both shipment volumes and fixed contract prices rose, and computer exports (including enterprise SSDs) also jumped on higher AI infrastructure spending.

Can Korea reach $1 trillion in annual exports?

Based on the roughly $814.5 billion shipped through September, about $185.5 billion is still needed, and the government says it expects to get there. The minister's pledge to head off external shocks, though, hints that some uncertainty remains.

  • Hyundai’s Tucson Is First Korean SUV to Hit 10 Million

Hyundai’s Tucson Is First Korean SUV to Hit 10 Million

As of September 30, 2026, Hyundai's Tucson has passed 10 million cumulative global sales, about 22 years after its 2004 debut. It's the first Korean-built SUV to reach that mark, and 91% of those sales came outside Korea.

About 10.62 millionGlobal cumulative sales, excluding the China-only model
91%Share of cumulative sales made in overseas markets
76%Share of 2023 overseas sales built in local plants
About 2.23 millionCumulative sales in the US

    Key points

    • By Hyundai's count, Tucson sales through August this year total about 10.62 million, excluding the China-only ix35.
    • Adding the ix35 brings the total to about 11.17 million, making Tucson the third Hyundai Motor Group model to join the 10-million club, after the Elantra and the Accent.
    • The US alone accounts for about 2.23 million sales, roughly 23% of overseas sales.
    • The fifth-generation redesign launches in Korea first, then rolls out to North America, Europe and other markets from 2027.

Hyundai released the Tucson's cumulative sales figures on the 30th. Since the first generation arrived in 2004, sales through August this year total about 10.62 million outside China. The ix35, sold only in China, is tallied separately. Adding that roughly 550,000 units brings the total to about 11.17 million.

The pace of sales has picked up over time. The Tucson hit 1 million in 2008 and passed 5 million in 2016. That took eight years, and getting from 5 million to 10 million took nine more. Within Hyundai Motor Group, the Tucson is the third model to do it, after the Elantra and the Accent. Annual sales peaked at about 730,000 in 2016 and dropped to about 470,000 in 2020 amid the pandemic. Expanding overseas plants and broadening hybrid options helped sales recover to around 700,000 in 2023.

Each new generation has sold more than the last. The first generation sold about 1.6 million and the second about 2.5 million. The third topped 3 million despite a shorter run. The fourth generation, still on sale, has moved about 3.37 million in roughly six years and eight months, the most of any generation. Average annual sales per generation have jumped more than fourfold, from about 120,000 for the first to about 510,000 for the fourth.

A shift in how the car is built underpins that growth. Of the Tucsons sold overseas, the share built in local plants was just 4% in 2005, rose to the mid-40s (44%) in 2010 and passed 70% in 2016. By 2023 it hit 76%. Cumulatively, about 5.86 million of roughly 9.66 million overseas sales, or around 61%, were assembled locally. Hyundai says its bases in places like the US and the Czech Republic have eased the burden of tariffs and exchange rates. Domestic cumulative sales come to about 950,000, or 9% of the total excluding China.

The US is the single largest market. Since Hyundai entered it in 2004, about 1.95 million gasoline-powered Tucsons and about 270,000 hybrids have been sold there. The hybrid share climbed from around 12% in 2021 to 32.5% in 2024 and stands at 27.8% for January through August this year. The fourth generation has held the top rating from the US Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), Top Safety Pick+, for five straight years since 2022. The new fifth generation is a boxy SUV with a larger body and Hyundai's 'Art of Steel' design language, and it will roll out overseas in stages starting in 2027.

In Korea right nowIn Korea, the milestone stands out because it belongs to a domestically built SUV that leans so heavily on exports. Even though Korea accounts for just 9% of Tucson sales, the model has been Hyundai's top seller overseas for five years running. Hyundai describes the shift as a move from an export-oriented model to a strategic global model built close to its customers. With tariffs and exchange rates so unpredictable now, some observers also say local production in the US, the Czech Republic and elsewhere has reduced risk. Interest is also running high because the fifth-generation model was unveiled recently and is gearing up for its Korean launch.

    FAQ

Why are there two totals, 10.62 million and 11.17 million?

The 10.62 million figure leaves out the ix35, which was sold only in China. Adding about 550,000 ix35 units gives roughly 11.17 million. Hyundai disclosed both tallies.

Where has the Tucson sold best?

The US. Since entering in 2004, Hyundai has sold about 2.23 million there, roughly 20% of the global total including the China-only model and about 23% of overseas sales.

When can overseas buyers get the new fifth-generation Tucson?

It launches in Korea first, then rolls out to major markets including North America and Europe in stages from 2027.

  • DMZ Mine Blast: UN Command Cites Armistice Breach

DMZ Mine Blast: UN Command Cites Armistice Breach

As of September 30, 2026, the UN Command has concluded that a landmine blast in the western Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) involved a violation of the Korean War armistice. North Korea's Kim Yo Jong, a senior Workers' Party official, denied it the same day, calling it a South Korean setup and threatening retaliation if shots are fired.

3Service members seriously injured in the Sept. 21 blast
At least 4North Korean mines believed to have been at the site
11 yearsHow long loudspeaker broadcasts aimed at the North stayed off after the 2015 incident

    Key points

    • On Sept. 21, a mine exploded in the western DMZ and seriously injured three service members, including a battalion commander (lieutenant colonel).
    • The UN Command said it confirmed one functional North Korean anti-personnel mine south of the military demarcation line.
    • South Korea's defense minister said North Korea is clearly responsible and promised phased countermeasures.
    • Kim Yo Jong called the incident 'Seoul's staged farce' and said the North would step up its military response near the DMZ.

The incident happened on Sept. 21 in an area under the Army's 25th Division. Troops were clearing a search path ahead of a UN Command survey of an area suspected of holding North Korean mines. During the work, a blast seriously injured three people, including a battalion commander, with injuries that included amputated ankles.

The military and the UN Command then investigated the site jointly. On the 29th, another North Korean-made plastic anti-personnel mine turned up near the blast site. On the 30th, the UN Command said its findings showed an armistice violation had occurred and that it is responding under the armistice framework. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the UN Command agreed that both blast sites and the newly found mine lie south of the military demarcation line. Defense Minister Kang Sin-chul stressed that North Korea bears responsibility and said Seoul will take phased steps using a range of tools, including cooperation with the international community and military responses. He did not spell out how.

Kim Yo Jong, sister of leader Kim Jong Un, dismissed the announcement, claiming the latest incident is a fabrication that mirrors the tactics of the wooden-box mine case from more than a decade ago. According to the North's account, no North Korean personnel crossed the border line, and since August South Korean forces have issued warning broadcasts and fired warning shots almost daily. She threatened swift retaliation if live fire occurs and said the North will add tactical response capabilities facing South Korea's 3rd Corps and 21st Division sector.

After the wooden-box mine incident on Aug. 4, 2015, the South Korean military announced within six days that North Korea was responsible and resumed loudspeaker broadcasts aimed at the North. Ten days later, North Korea fired artillery and tensions rose, but high-level talks at Panmunjom ended in an expression of regret from the North and an agreement to halt the broadcasts. How the military chooses its response this time, and how North Korea reacts, is seen as the key to keeping the situation under control.

In Korea right nowIn South Korea, attention is on how strong the response will be, given that troops were hurt and memories of the 2015 incident remain fresh. The Joint Chiefs of Staff urged North Korea to immediately halt its border fortification work and apologize. In politics, the ruling party reportedly said it would be unacceptable if the North planted the mines, while the opposition said real, tangible countermeasures are needed.

    FAQ

Where and when did the incident happen?

It happened on Sept. 21 in the western part of the DMZ. Three service members clearing a search path were seriously injured in the blast.

What did the UN Command conclude?

A joint investigation found a functional North Korean anti-personnel mine south of the military demarcation line. On that basis, the UN Command determined an armistice violation had occurred.

How has the South Korean government said it will respond?

The defense minister said North Korea's responsibility is clear and that countermeasures will come in phases. Cooperation with the international community and military responses were mentioned, but no details have been released.

  • RM’s Art Collection Makes Its Museum Debut at SFMOMA

RM’s Art Collection Makes Its Museum Debut at SFMOMA

As of September 30, 2026, the personal art collection BTS's RM has built over the years is about to go on museum view for the first time. The show opens Oct. 3 at SFMOMA in San Francisco and runs through Feb. 7, 2027. Of roughly 180 works on display, about 140 come from RM's own collection.

About 140Works on view from RM's personal collection
About 180Total works, including pieces from the museum's holdings
16Yun Hyong-keun works filling their own gallery
    Feb. 7, 2027Closing date

    Key points

    • Co-organized by SFMOMA and RM, the exhibition opens Oct. 3 and closes Feb. 7, 2027.
    • About 180 works are on view in total, and roughly 140 of them belong to RM personally.
    • RM picked the works with two SFMOMA curators, wrote the wall texts, recorded the audio guide and chose the music.
    • Korean artists' works are paired with those of Western masters so that universal themes like nature and memory can be read side by side.

Art lover RM's collection is heading to a museum wall for the first time. San Francisco's SFMOMA has announced a collaborative show opening Oct. 3, subtitled 'Between You and Me,' that runs through Feb. 7, 2027. SFMOMA, which opened in 1935, is one of the best-known modern and contemporary art museums in the US.

In all, about 180 works are on view. Roughly 140 come from the collection RM has been building for nearly a decade, and the rest are drawn from the museum's own holdings. RM's collection centers on modern and contemporary Korean artists, including Yun Hyong-keun, Chang Ucchin, Yoo Youngkuk, Kim Tschang-yeul and Do Sang-bong. Yun, reportedly a particular favorite of RM's, gets a dedicated gallery with 16 works.

RM was more than a lender. Working with SFMOMA curators América Castillo and Hyoeun Kim, RM chose the works and shaped the flow of the show. RM wrote the wall texts and object labels in both Korean and English, and recorded the audio guide in both languages. The music playing in the galleries is RM's pick, too. RM has described the show as a long introduction to who RM is.

The most striking part is the way works from different eras and places are set up in pairs. Kim Whanki's blue dot painting hangs alongside a sponge sculpture by Yves Klein, famous for his signature blue, inviting a comparison of how color is used to contemplate the cosmos and infinity. Do Sang-bong's still life is matched with a flower painting by Giorgio Morandi, and Yun's work with a piece by minimalist Donald Judd. Yun and Judd actually knew each other, so that pairing carries a personal connection.

The collecting began in 2018. In an August interview with The New York Times, RM recalled seeing Western masterpieces at the Art Institute of Chicago during a US tour and feeling embarrassed at how little RM knew about Korea's own artists. Determined to find those roots, RM began seeking out Korean artists, and that journey led to this show.

In Korea right nowIn Korea, RM has been talked about as an art enthusiast since around 2019. Reports of RM visiting the Lee Ufan Space at the Busan Museum of Art and a Yun Hyong-keun show in Venice led fans to follow those footsteps, giving rise to the term 'RM tour.' In 2020, RM shared Kim Boghee's solo show at Kumho Museum of Art on social media, drawing more attention to the exhibition. RM has also given back, donating to the MMCA Foundation (the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art's foundation) and the Overseas Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation. That money reportedly paid to reprint out-of-print Korean art catalogs, which were then distributed to libraries nationwide. For many in Korea, the SFMOMA show is significant because fan enthusiasm has grown into a push to introduce Korean art abroad.

    ‘Assassin(s)’ Filmmakers Face Police Complaint

As of September 29, 2026, the makers of 'Assassin(s)', a film inspired by the 1974 killing of first lady Yuk Young-soo, have been reported to police on defamation charges. Former Seoul city councilor Lee Jong-bae filed the complaint with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency today. Around the same time, the film lost its No. 1 box office spot to 'Tazza: The Song of Beelzebub' on its sixth day in theaters.

Sept. 23Theatrical release date of 'Assassin(s)'
No. 2Box office rank on the 28th
About 67,000Daily admissions on the 28th
1974Year of the real event the film draws on

    Key points

    • Former Seoul city councilor Lee Jong-bae filed a defamation complaint with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency against director Heo Jin-ho, the studio's CEO and the screenwriter.
    • The complainant argues the film makes it look as if former President Park Chung-hee was behind the killing.
    • In a statement on the 28th, studio Hive Media Corp said the film was not made with any specific political agenda.
    • On the 28th, 'Assassin(s)' finished a close second to 'Tazza: The Song of Beelzebub' in daily admissions.

'Assassin(s)' hit theaters on Sept. 23, just ahead of the Chuseok (Korean harvest holiday) break. On the 29th, former Seoul city councilor Lee Jong-bae submitted paperwork to the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency accusing director Heo Jin-ho, the studio's CEO and the screenwriter of defamation. Lee argues that the film steers its story so that former President Park Chung-hee appears to be the man behind the killing. He also pointed to the title, plural rather than singular, as a hint that perpetrators other than Moon Se-kwang may have been involved.

The film draws on a shooting at a 1974 Liberation Day ceremony that killed Yuk Young-soo, the first lady at the time. The man named as the gunman, Moon Se-kwang, was a second-generation Korean resident of Japan. Investigators concluded that he acted on orders from North Korea and Chongryon, the pro-Pyongyang association of Koreans in Japan. The film views that conclusion, and what lay behind it, with suspicion, and even raises the possibility that the upper ranks of the Korean Central Intelligence Agency staged the incident to break a political deadlock. Some in political circles have criticized that setup as a distortion aimed at a specific individual.

Hive Media Corp drew a line under the controversy in a statement on the 28th. It said the film is a work of fiction that draws on surviving records and adds imagination, with no intent to deny or overturn established facts. The Park Chung-hee Memorial Foundation, however, said the film damages historical fact and demanded that the studio apologize and halt screenings.

The fallout is showing up at the box office too. According to the Korean Film Council's integrated ticketing network, 'Assassin(s)' drew about 67,000 viewers on the 28th, trailing 'Tazza: The Song of Beelzebub' at about 69,000. Tazza pulled in more than 130,000 viewers on its opening day, ending a 49-day run at No. 1 for 'Odyssey,' and topped 1 million admissions over the holiday. Media outlets point to the history-distortion fight as a reason for the slide.

In Korea right nowIn Korea, the debate is now over where imagination ends when a feature film takes on real people and sensitive moments in modern history. With political figures and a memorial group pushing back, and now a criminal complaint, judgments of the film are turning into a fight over political readings rather than craft. As the biggest talking point of the holiday season, the film also has people watching how its first-week audience numbers will shift.

    FAQ

What event does 'Assassin(s)' deal with?

It's a feature film inspired by the shooting death of first lady Yuk Young-soo at a 1974 Liberation Day ceremony. It questions the official conclusion of investigators and who was behind the killing, and character names and other details are fictionalized.

What are the filmmakers accused of?

Former Seoul city councilor Lee Jong-bae filed a complaint alleging the film defames former President Park Chung-hee by depicting him as the man behind the killing. The complaint has only just been filed, so there is no investigation result or legal ruling yet.

How has the studio responded to the controversy?

The studio says the film is a work of fiction that adds cinematic imagination to real records. Its position is that the film was not made with any specific political aim or to deny established facts.

  • Nongshim Opens Shin Ramyun Pop-Up on the Seine

Nongshim Opens Shin Ramyun Pop-Up on the Seine

As of September 29, 2026, Nongshim says it will bring Shin Ramyun to SIAL Paris 2026, the food trade show running Oct. 17-21 in France, as part of a push into Europe. The company will debut Shin Ramyun Rose in Europe on the show floor and run an interactive pop-up store near the Seine that pairs the noodles with French ingredients.

    Oct. 17–21SIAL Paris 2026 dates
About 280,000Expected attendance (industry professionals and visitors combined)
3French regions supplying toppings (Normandy, Alsace, Provence)

    Key points

    • Nongshim will introduce Shin Ramyun Rose to the European market for the first time at its indoor booth.
    • At an outdoor plaza in front of Hall 4A, staff will cook Shin Ramyun Tumba on the spot and serve it as samples.
    • At the 'Shin Ramyun Bunsik' (bunsik means Korean snack-bar food) pop-up near Paris's Bir-Hakeim Bridge on the Seine, visitors can pick toppings from Normandy, Alsace and Provence.
    • Nongshim CEO Cho Yong-chul will attend the event in person.

Nongshim has picked 'SHIN' as its shorthand theme for the show and plans to introduce the full Shin Ramyun brand to global buyers and everyday consumers. SIAL Paris, considered one of the world's three biggest food trade shows, is held every two years, and organizers expect around 280,000 industry professionals and visitors combined this time.

The indoor booth is built around Shin Ramyun Rose, which is making its European debut. It will feature a giant product model, promo videos and a tasting corner. Nongshim's other flagship products, including Chapagetti, Neoguri and Soon Ramyun, will sit alongside its health supplement brand Raipil, and the company will hold export meetings with overseas buyers at the same time.

The outdoor programming is the most interesting part of the plan. Trade shows have mostly allowed sampling of packaged finished products, but Nongshim says it got permission to cook on site and will set up a dedicated Shin Ramyun Tumba booth on the plaza in front of Hall 4A. One outlet described it as a first for the show. The idea is to let visitors see the noodles cooked and taste them, then carry that interest back to the new product at the indoor booth and the export meetings.

The Seine pop-up follows a 'From the Han River to the Seine' concept, transplanting the instant-ramen culture familiar from Korean convenience stores and Han River parks to central Paris. Visitors can top Shin Ramyun or Shin Ramyun Tumba with specialty ingredients from three French regions, and there's a photo zone with the Eiffel Tower in the background. CEO Cho Yong-chul said Nongshim wants to raise Shin Ramyun's profile by widening the ways consumers can meet the brand, inside and outside the show grounds and all the way to the Seine.

In Korea right nowIn Korea, cooking ramen in a portable cooker in a Han River park has become a leisure ritual of its own. By moving that scene to the Seine, Nongshim is drawing attention as an example of K-food expanding beyond product exports into food-culture experiences. Ahead of the Paris event, Korean business outlets have also been watching the company's European strategy.

    FAQ

    What is SIAL Paris?

It's a major food trade show held in Paris every two years, where food industry professionals and buyers from around the world check out new products and market trends. This year it runs Oct. 17-21.

    What is Shin Ramyun Rose?

It's a new product Nongshim is unveiling in Europe for the first time. It will be presented at the indoor booth through tastings, videos and a giant model.

Can the general public try Shin Ramyun in Paris?

Nongshim says visitors can try freshly cooked Shin Ramyun Tumba at the Shin Ramyun Bunsik pop-up near the Bir-Hakeim Bridge on the Seine and at the booth on the plaza in front of Hall 4A.

    FirstSamsung SDI's DCWA appearance

    Key points

    • This is Samsung SDI's first booth at DCWA, an event with more than 600 companies on its roster.
    • The booth is split into four zones: UPS, BBU, SBB and cells.
    • The UPS product at the center of the booth was billed as passing every item in a large-scale fire test (LSFT) run by UL Solutions.
    • A prismatic LFP battery destined for the SBB 2.0 all-in-one energy storage system is also on display.

Samsung SDI says it is using DCWA 2026, a data center industry show in Singapore, to roll out battery solutions for AI data centers. The show covers the whole industry, from designing and building data centers to running and managing them, and ranks among the largest in Asia. It's Samsung SDI's first time showing up.

The cylindrical LFP battery is the centerpiece. According to the company, in-house structural technology boosts power output and capacity while also improving safety. Samsung SDI also brought a prismatic battery that uses LFP chemistry. That one is slated for SBB 2.0, an all-in-one energy storage system (ESS).

Safety was the message running through the whole booth. The UPS (uninterruptible power supply) solution in the middle of the floor reportedly passed every item in the LSFT run by UL Solutions, a test that checks for battery explosion and heat-spread risks. The BBU (battery backup unit) zone features a ternary-chemistry 21700 cylindrical cell with a vent structure at the bottom, along with a cylindrical product designed for emergency power at AI data centers.

During the show, Samsung SDI plans to brief global customers on its technology development and present its data center battery solutions at a local technical conference. Some reports read the move as an effort to build a new revenue base in power-hungry, fire-sensitive Big Tech data centers while electric vehicle demand stays soft. A company representative said Samsung SDI will keep leading with performance and safety and offer products tailored to each customer's needs.

In Korea right nowKorean outlets are framing Samsung SDI's appearance as an attempt to widen its playing field from EVs, where the market has stalled, to AI data centers. Two things are drawing attention: the fire-safety test results placed front and center at the booth, and a LFP lineup that now covers both cylindrical and prismatic formats.

    FAQ

What's new about the cylindrical LFP battery?

Samsung SDI showed a cylindrical cell using LFP chemistry for the first time at this show. The company says its in-house structural technology raises power output and capacity while strengthening safety.

What safety results is Samsung SDI touting at the show?

The company says its UPS solution passed every item in UL Solutions' large-scale fire test (LSFT). The test checks for battery explosion and heat-spread risks.

Why is Samsung SDI going after the data center market?

Some reports say the company wants a new growth engine in power-hungry large data centers as EV demand slows.

Foreign Tourist Arrivals Hit Record 15.05M Through Aug

As of September 28, 2026, foreign tourist arrivals to Korea hit a record 15.05 million from January through August, according to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. That's up 21.6% year over year, and Korea crossed the 15-million mark roughly a month earlier than it did last year.

15.05 millionCumulative foreign tourist arrivals to Korea, Jan–Aug 2026
    21.6%Year-over-year growth in tourist arrivals
    ₩14.02 trillion (~$10.1B)Foreign tourist card spending, Jan–Aug 2026
27.8%Share of arrivals entering via regional airports and ports

    Key points

    • August alone brought 2.25 million visitors, the highest total ever recorded for that month.
    • Foreign tourists' card spending topped 14 trillion won, growing even faster than visitor numbers.
    • The share of arrivals coming through regional airports and ports, rather than the Seoul area, hit its highest level of the year.
    • Chinese-speaking visitors led the surge, with steady growth across Southeast Asian countries as well.

According to figures released September 28 by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization, the number of foreign visitors to Korea through August set a new record. The country crossed 15 million cumulative arrivals about a month earlier than last year, and August alone outdrew every previous August on record.

The spending numbers stand out even more. Foreign visitors' tourism-related card spending topped ₩14 trillion (roughly $10.1 billion) over the same period — growing faster than the headcount itself, a sign that per-visitor spending is climbing.

Entry points are diversifying too. Instead of funneling through Incheon or Gimpo in the greater Seoul area, the share of visitors arriving via regional airports and ports climbed to its highest point this year, suggesting inbound tourism's center of gravity is inching away from Seoul. By nationality, visitors from Greater China — mainland China and Taiwan — rose sharply, and Southeast Asian countries including the Philippines, Vietnam, and Indonesia all saw increases without exception. Indonesia posted the steepest growth of any Southeast Asian country, emerging as a new growth engine.

Behind the surge is the government's push to lower entry barriers. Since late March, Korea has eased multiple-entry visa requirements for 11 Southeast Asian countries, including the Philippines, Vietnam, and Indonesia, and since late May it has temporarily allowed visa-free entry for Indonesian group tourists. The Korea Tourism Organization has also set up a visa-assistance desk in New Delhi, India, and simplified screening paperwork in Manila, the Philippines, as part of its on-the-ground support.

The ministry said it plans to keep streamlining entry procedures and tying promotion to K-culture through the fourth quarter, aiming to sustain the momentum through October's peak travel season.

In Korea right nowIn Korea, the numbers are being welcomed as a bright spot to offset sluggish domestic consumption. Shopping districts like Myeongdong and Jongno report a visible uptick in foreign foot traffic, and regions outside the capital are increasingly hoping to cash in on visitor spending too.

    FAQ

Why did foreign tourist arrivals jump so much this year?

Easier entry, including relaxed multiple-entry visa rules for 11 Southeast Asian countries and a temporary visa-free trial for Indonesian group tourists, combined with stepped-up on-the-ground promotion, drove the surge.

Which nationalities saw the biggest increases?

Visitors from Greater China, including mainland China and Taiwan, rose the most, while Indonesia posted the steepest growth among Southeast Asian countries.

Are more Koreans traveling abroad too?

Yes — about 19.81 million Koreans traveled overseas from January through August, reaching 98.7% of pre-pandemic 2019 levels.
